As June faded into July I began to wonder if I would find the right college. After graduating tenth in my class with cumulative of 4.0 I had little doubts that I would not be able to get into Penn State, although I did have my doubts about the football scholarship. One day I got a call from the assistant head coach of my high school varsity team.

“Chris, I know you’ve graduated and are really busy looking for schools,” he started out, “but I bet I can help with that scholarship. Why don’t you come by the house tonight and we can strike up a deal. But it’s gonna cost you.”

So I finished dinner and headed straight for the car. Dad asked where I was going and I said just out to hang with a few of my friends.

As I pulled into his street I noticed that he was out mowing the lawn. He was topless and was wearing only a pair of short hiking shorts. He had beautiful pecs that I’ve always wanted to nibble on. And just below them was a nicely sculpted six-pack.

As I approached the driveway he motioned for me to just park in the street. He apparently wanted to put the mower back before I parked in front of the little utility shed.

As I got out he pulled a shirt over his head and said to make myself at home in the living room while he put the mower away. I opened the front door to reveal a moderately sized room with two sofas and an armchair. Above the fireplace were many football trophies, which made me wonder why he never went on to college ball.

A few minutes later he came through the back of the house to meet me. He was about 5’ 2” well tanned and in great shape for his age. I knew he had just celebrated his thirty-sixth birthday the past week. In fact there seemed to be some wrapping paper peeking out of a trashcan nearby the doorway.

He settled down in the armchair that was opposite the sofa I was sitting on. He asked me a few questions about where I was looking and why I wanted to attend there. After about half an hour or so he finally said that he could get me a position on the team at Penn State and the scholarship along with it. His old time roommate worked as the athletics director and was close with the football team.

“So, there you have it.” he said. “Now just one favor.”

“A favor?” I asked quizzically.

“Yes. Remember I mentioned it’s gonna cost you.”

“Oh yeah that’s right. I forgot,” I said. “So what do you want me to do?”

“Come over here and I’ll tell you.”
